Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery (sometimes called laparoscopic surgery or even robotic surgery) is done through small incisions using specialized techniques, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiberoptic flashlights and high definition monitors. The Surgeons of Gynecologists of Reno can perform surgery through incisions that require only a stitch or two to close.

For patients, minimally invasive surgery means less trauma to the body, less blood loss, smaller surgical scars, and most importantly, faster recovery. Patients leave the hospital and return to normal activities sooner than with conventional open surgery. Most patients are able to get back to almost all of their normal activities within 2 weeks as compared to the normal 6-8 weeks following an open procedure. There are two types of minimally invasive surgeries: Intra-Abdominal Minimally Invasive Surgery and Non Intra-Abdominal Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Intra-Abdominal Minimally Invasive Surgery

These procedures are for patients needing surgery to remove, fix, or evaluate organs in the pelvis. Minimally invasive surgery allows these surgeries to be done through small incisions (less than an inch) instead of larger incisions (6-10 inches). Categories of minimally invasive surgery include:

  1. Pelviscopy/Laparoscopy - evaluation of the pelvis facilitating removal of adhesions, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ovaries, tubes, etc.
  2. Hysterectomy - removal of the uterus
  3. Myomectomy - removal of fibroids
  4. Sacralcolpopexy - for pelvic support problems. This lifts the top of the vagina by attaching it to the sacrum.
  5. Utero-sacral ligament shortening may also be done with similar results, lifting the cervix and/or upper aspect of the vagina by tightening/shorting the ligaments from the cervix to the sacrum.

Non Intra-Abdominal Minimally Invasive Surgery

Many of these procedures are done through small incisions, or a natural opening in the body. Most non-intra abdominal minimally invasive surgeries are completed in our office, or in an out-patient surgery center. Types of non-intra abdominal minimally invasive surgeries include:

  1. Endometrial ablation - transcervical destruction of the lining of the uterus to reduce or eliminate period flow. This is an alternative to hysterectomy.
  2. Advanced hysteroscopy - allows visualization of the uterine cavity and removal of abnormalities.
  3. Permanent Sterilization - Blockage of the fallopian tubes:
    • Tubal Ligation - done laparoscopically
    • Adiana and Essure - implants are placed into the tubes via the vagina without incisions.
  4. Dilation and Curettage (D&C)* - Involves dilating the opening of the cervix and obtaining tissue from inside the uterus, endometrial sampling.
  5. Urethral sling - outpatient procedure used to treat urinary incontinence
  6. Labiaplasty/vaginoplasty - restructuring the vulva and/or vagina
