What is the Novasure procedure, and how does it differ from those traditional treatment options? The NovaSure procedure is an endometrial ablation, meaning a way to permanently remove the inner lining of the uterus that produces the period, thus causing no or less period flow each month. This quick procedure with rapid recovery can be done in the office or outpatient setting and is a treatment alternative to a hysterectomy and a choice that avoids the potential side effects of hormone therapy. Novasure not only reduces or eliminates menstrual bleeding, but also decreases cramping and PMDD symptoms associated with the period.

The results of the NovaSure procedure are excellent with >50% of patients never having another period in their lifetime, >40% of the remaining patients having improvement in their bleeding and symptoms, and thus, >90% are happy with their results. Only women who are done with their fertility and have a reliable form of birth control are candidates for this procedure.

Who might be a good candidate for the procedure?

Any woman, who has completed her childbearing, experiencing periods and associated symptoms that adversely affect her life may be a good candidate for NovaSure endometrial ablation. All women should have a complete workup to evaluate the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) before having any treatment to optimize results and minimize the need for further treatment.
