How is Minimally Invasive Surgery Different?
Minimally invasive surgery (sometimes called laparoscopic surgery or even robotic surgery) is done through small incisions using
specialized techniques, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiberoptic flashlights and high definition monitors. The Surgeons of Reno Gynecology can perform surgery through
incisions that require only a stitch or two to close.
For patients, minimally invasive surgery means less trauma to the body, less blood loss, smaller surgical scars, and most importantly, faster recovery. Patients leave the hospital and return to normal activities sooner than with conventional open surgery. Most patients are able to get back to almost
all of their normal activities within 2 weeks as compared to the normal 6-8 weeks following an open procedure.
TYPES OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERIES
The following are some of the types of minimally invasive surgeries performed by the Surgeons at Reno Gynecology. These procedures may be done with the assistance of the da Vinci System (robotics). Robotics offers improved visualization, more precise dissection, three-dimensional vision, tremor reduction,
and improved ergonomics for the surgeon.
HYSTERECTOMY
- TLH: Total laparoscopic hysterectomy
- LSH: Laparoscopic supra-cervical hysterectomy
- LAVH: Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy
- dLH: da Vinci assisted vaginal hysterectomy
MYOMECTOMY
- Laparoscopic removal of uterine fibroid tumors
SACROCOLPOPEXY
- Laparoscopic treatment for vaginal vault prolapse
SALPINGO-OOPHORECTOMY
- Laparoscopic removal of the tubes and ovaries
ENDOMETRIOSIS TREATMENT
- Laparoscopic removal of implants and scar tissue
OTHER TYPES OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERIES
The following are some of the types of minimally invasive surgeries that do not involve laparoscopy. Many of these procedures are done through small incisions or natural openings in the body. Most can be done in the office or in outpatient surgery centers.
ENDOMETRIAL ABLATION
- Trans-cervical destruction of the lining of the uterus to reduce or get rid of periods (alternative to hysterectomy)
ADVANCED HYSTEROSCOPY
- Trans-cervical removal of myomas and polyps
ESSURE TUBAL OCCLUSION
- Trans-cervical tubal occlusion (sterilization)
URETHRAL SLING
- Treatment for urinary incontinence
LABIAPLASTY / VAGINOPLASTY
- Vulvar enhancement and tightening/rejuvenation
