Vaginoplasty is a procedure that tightens the vagina affording increased friction and sensation during intercourse for you and your partner. This procedure tightens the pelvic floor muscles between the vagina and the rectum from the outside opening (perineum) to approximately 5 - 7 cm inside the vagina.

Women who chose to have this procedure usually note a laxity in the opening and walls of the vagina. This usually occurs after having children vaginally causing stretching of all these tissues/muscles. Vaginal birth may also lead to tears or the need for an episiotomy, which sometimes does not heal properly, thus aggravating the problem more. If this laxity causes decreased sensation vaginally for you or your partner, then vaginoplasty may help.

Vaginoplasty can be done in the office or in an outpatient surgery center. It involves making an incision in the posterior wall of the vagina, re-approximating the pelvic floor muscles and then sizing the vagina appropriately. This procedure usually takes about and hour to an hour and a half to perform. Patients go home the same day, with decreased activity recommended the first 1 - 2 weeks post-operatively. Complete healing takes approximately six to eight weeks. At this time, patients are instructed to begin massaging the surgical site and to work on softening the scar tissue so they can get back to relations as soon as possible after this healing period with the least amount of discomfort.

Vaginoplasty is not usually covered by insurance companies. When possible, having the procedure in the office may be more cost effective as there is only one charge from our office.
