Urethral Sling

My Women's Center

Placement of a urethral sling is a very effective treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This procedure is generally performed in the operating room as an outpatient surgery. Through small incision(s), a permanent mesh tape is placed under the mid-urethra, lending support, so that urinary leaking does not occur with cough, sneeze, laugh, or activity. This procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to perform and patients leave the hospital the same day.

This procedure is successful 95% for the time for treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The long-term results are excellent as well. To insure these excellent results, it is important to avoid heavy lifting of straining for 3 months postoperatively. Usually patients can get back to usual activities 1 - 2 weeks postoperatively and only need to take pain medications for a few days to a week.

This procedure is one of the most satisfying treatments we perform because it is safe, effective, and minimally invasive. If you experience bothersome leaking of urine with cough, sneeze, laugh, jump, etc., ask your doctor about this treatment option.
